Help with mould growth
« on: 29 January 2013, 22:36 »
Guys, i need a bit of advice. I keep on getting mould growing behind the headboard and the picture frame and have to keep on cleaning it with mould killer regularly. It is on an external wall with no insulation due to the house being an early build.

Any suggestions on how I can stop this from happening?

Ventilation is the only cure.

More info required but at a pure guess is it an old house with solid wals and you have fitted PVC double glazing?
If so that is your problem.

Ventilation, heating, don't have your bed right up to the wall. We had it like mad ruined clothing and or wardrobe. We had to put extractor fans in kitchen and bathroom. Window vents in the windows.  It can be a range of things

yep ventilation is key iv seen so many houses where people block ventilators and then wonder why they are getting mould problems also try keeping the bed away from the walls so that the air can circulate, but your first priority is to get rid of the mould properly
this is the stuff that we use at work, you would need to treat the whole wall and not just the bit thats mouldy and repaint

Plant some button mushroom spores, at least you get some free food then... How old is the property, solid wall? I had similar problems, as said ventilation is key, I've installed two extractors running on humidity stats, one for bathroom, one for kitchen, started digging out the front garden as its filled with soil (over a foot from ground level) causing water retention and not allowing the walls to breath much. Once that's done, I'll add an additional down pipe (no down pipe currently) as well and maybe a third extractor to an additional room, but there has been huge improvements with every improvement done, joys of Victorian build!

Check for external wall for moss growth, moss helps hold moisture in, dettol kills moss quite well from experience, which I was suggested by a civil engineer friend, with black dots, I know chemicals containing copper they hate, otherwise top tip is usually use a bleach/chlorine solution to clean the area, but still try and fix the original problem otherwise you will get the mould returning. I know on fresh plaster its very rare to see mould due to the high levels of alkaline from the lime, which mould absolutely hates.

There's a reason this is happening. Your house must be letting in water some place and its making the wall damp. You need to find out where and stop it or this will get worse. No matter what you do if its not stopped where its getting in it will just keep coming back. You could be looking at a big bill to fix it but at the same time as said above this stuff can cause real health problems. My dad was a joiner for 45 years I'll show this to him and see what he says in the morning.
