Winter Tyres on a GTD - Anyone got any - what sort / your thoughts

My GTD on standard Bridgestone's is useless in snow - Anyone running Winter Tyres?  What sort / your thoughts?

I fitted Noikan WR A3 winter tyres to mine and I am impressed, got a set for £360,(225/40 18). We ahve a hill and a sharp right turn at the end of our road, normally when that gets covered in snow and freezes, it is a nightmare to get out, all cars slid into the kerb and usually the only way out is with a push from the neighbours. But now the car just sailed up the hill and out onto the main road with no problem.

I've got Hankook Ice Bears on my Passat and they are brilliant. I can't comment on the Golf as that stays in the garage most of the winter.

Now is not really the  time to be buying them tho', you'll want summer tyres back on in about 6-7 weeks all being well. I'd get yourself a set of 17" Monzas or something similar, then refurb them if they need it, fit some winter tyres when the sun is cracking the flag and you'll be all ready to bolt them on come the end of October.

I fitted Hankook winter tyres last winter and, due to lazinest, I have left them on thus far.
As winter tyres (i.e. optimum time during 5 degrees and below) they are great, but I defo should have changed for other conditions

Kuhmo KW27's on the GTI and Ice Bears on the wifes Yaris. Both superb in these conditions, but the Kuhmo's just edge it in my opinion

Dunlop sport 4Ds on my GTI and they are superb

It is great being able to take detours around long queues of traffic down roads that people on summer tyres couldnt get 10 yards. The traction control light rarely comes on.

In cold and heavy rain conditions they excel.

 I will be running them from November to March from now on, I live up a steep lane and would have been leaving my car on the road this week if they had not been fitted.

I bought a set of used 18" VW alloys from Neil on here and put them with a set of Vredestein Xtremes on them. My previous experience with the Bridgestones was as yours - I got stuck on my drive 

Fantastic combination and the difference in traction means I remain mobile.

Where I live, our road doesn't get gritted and my neighbours 520 Touring and Merc E class were stuck on the drive until yesterday whereas I was first out on Monday morning with around 4-5" of snow.

When I originally got them fitted to the alloys my tyre fitter said " you've decided to fit the best ones then?" Enough said. 

Recommended?  Absolutely.

I fitted my winter wheels/tyres a couple of weeks ago and waited for the snow.I also noticed the traction control light does not come on.Worth every penny.Previous winters I could not get off my street,no problem now not even any noticeable wheel spin.

I got Continentals ContiWinterContact TS 850. Compared to the standard Dunlop's a great improvement! great traction and had no problems driving in the snow and ice at the speed limit. Put them on the 18" Monza's with no problem.

Best investment i have made for the car so far!

i have always used Winter tyres on a spare set of alloys over the bad weather conditions, can't praise them enough and the difference betweeen them is night n day, i run Vredsteins on mine but most premium winter tyres have a similar levels in grip and performance, 

I think it is illegal in Germany not to run on winter tyres over the winter period ? and the dealers even store and swap them over  for you,     should be the same here imo
