The blowing is still there after doing this?

Ok so I put some exhaust paste around the downpipe to turbo joint and it made it a little quieter. So order the gasket from VW. Got cracking with it this morning to find that there wasn't even an old gasket there. So put it on and hey presto the blowing is back to the old ways before the exhaust paste! Yes!! So here's a picture of what I did.
Does anyone know of any other causes? The turbo to manifold gasket maybe? But why would the blowing be quieter with exhaust paste round the downpipe to turbo joint? Please help as this is now really annoying the shizz out of me!

Did you clean all the paste of the two surfaces when fitting the gasket ...?
Im sure your just supposed to use a gasket on its own with no sealant ....I'm interested to know the out come of this as mine is doing the same ...

Get a sleeve made over it mate. Any exhaut place can do it

Why not just put a VW gasket on and tighten properly?

You still got a cat in?  NEVER use exhaust paste before a cat

Yeah genuine VW gasket and sanded both sides down to remove everything that could get in the way. A hgv mechanic in my local said get two more gaskets and some better paste. Use the paste on the inner lip of the turbo then put a gasket, more paste, another gasket, then paste and fit the downpipe back on?

He said take the downpipe off and put it up against some glass or something perfectly flat but I think it welded to the rest of the exhaust. So two gaskets first if not I will check for warping. Then decat if it is :)

Are you sure it's blowing from the joint? and hasn't got either a crack on the downpipe weld or a massive crack on the hot side of the turbo? Or you haven't got flat faces on your joints

Depending on how loud the blowing is have you checked the manifold to turbo gasket? I had one of the 3 bolts work itself loose when a mechanic didn't use loctite.

Also could possibly be cracked turbo housing or manifold. Or even manifold to head.

When the car is completely cold turn it on and put your hand down there (I would say wet your hand a little to help but in these temps you might lose a finger or two) and have a feel for where the air is coming from.
