Old car? Cold weather?
The first thing to do is get a multimeter across the battery.

I plan on getting Vag-Com in the not too distant future, but for now this is what I use and it works fine:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/U281-VW-Audi-Skoda-Seat-VAG-CAN-BUS-Fault-Code-Reader-Scanner-diagnostic-tool-UK-/221040985066?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item337711c3ea
Dead easy to use, it'll give you any fault codes it finds (not 100% sure how reliable it is and whether it finds
everything
but it's better than nothing) and you can then search for these online to get a description (the manual only lists a handful of common codes) and possible actions to sort it. Once sorted/noted down, you can clear the codes from the car. This particular one apparently comes with a CD with all the fault codes listed on it, but I just use this to search for the codes as the explanations are decent - also search the forum here as there's likely already posts and solutions to anything you come across:
