Ready for the rolling road day next month, let's see those horses rise!

Before

After

Removed all the fins on the inside as well as the intake trumpet. Looks rough, but it's all smooth I assure you

Waiting for the top half to arrive so I can give it the same treatment then I'll fit it all in and see how it goes

How did you remove the fins?

I leave mine in for turbulent air.

I fear you won't see as good gains on a rolling road than driving along at 70-100mph

Used dremel and cutting disk/sanding drum attachments. JKM have two big f*cking powerful fans in front of the car so it should be decent. This prototype is about stopping heat soak more than anything. We'll see how it compares to a very "open" airbox.

Sweet as should be a good test then.

I don't know if its worth smoothing out or not. Doubt there's any difference.

Might do mine then line it with silver tape

Not silver tape, but I did as Ess_three about lining it with heat reflective gold foil, to give it an extra layer of heat protection, but he said the plastic is a good enough insulator so there's no need for the foil. Reason I got rid of fins is to create smoother airflow upwards into the filter + more room inside (only by a bit, but the amount of plastic I removed was surprising!)

Are you going to test this back to back with an unmodified item?

It would be difficult to tell the difference otherwise, even if you have tested previously on a different day.

How are you going to change the heat soak properties by removing the strengthening / turbulence fins from the air box?

You do realise that the fins are also there as both structural items and to create turbulent airflow into the engine don't you.... (not required so much on a force induction engine)

No, as unless I run twice and change the parts in between I can't. But having been to JKM many other times I know roughly how the car perform with different bits.

I didn't say removing the fins would help reduce heatsoak. I removed the fins to create a smooth curvature for air to flow upwards past the filter. Strengthening is not an issue, this is the airbox I ran for months (the one I saw a reduction in power) and it never buckled or collapsed.

Turbulence is not really going to be affected by a couple of fins at the other end of where it counts. The grooves and ridges inside the intake trumpet create enough turbulence on their own, plus the rush of air past the 4 intake pipes in the manifold. By the time the air gets to the cylinder it's pretty damn shuffled.

Honestly, the variation on the day in terms of ambient temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure etc.
Will provide noise enough to cover any effect from the airbox work.
This is why you have to do this sort of thing in the same session.

If concerned about heat soak, look at trying to shield the metal intake manifold from the exhaust heat below & that coming from the rocker cover.
