Cutting out Problems

Having read a few forums - I see that this is a common problem on the Golf.  I was driving along this morning (60mph) when the car just died on me (would not rev more than 3000). I tried to put my foot down but still nothing happened.  I came to a junction and accelerated away fine - no more problems.

Has any one else had this problem and how did you manage to fix it.

Hi from a newbie!

I have a 1.8T 3 door as a company car. Had it since new in March 2001. I too have had problems with engine cutting out when slowing for corners with the resulting loss of power assisted steering, and a refusal to pick up when cold. A 40k service was recommended by the dealer as a cure when the problem started at about the 39k mark and the car was 27 months old. It went well for a week then started cutting out again. Their technian couldn't find any obvious faults and the computer showed all ok. From reading John's thread he has similar problems and I wonder if the two are connected.

The car I have got is a Mk 4 (1.8 GTi) not got a turbo.

The problem I had was not exactly cutting out but a major loss of power (as I said not being able to rev more that 3000rev/min) no matter if I floored the accelerator - Steering was ok though. I bought it at an auction and it has done 106k miles, but it seems that no matter what mileage people have done this is a common problem.

Talking to a colleague - he says its the damp weather and the HT leads need some WD40 on them - I will try this tonight and I will let you know.

Hi John,
after posting yesterday I phoned another VW garage and gave them the symtoms. Their foreman reckoned from previous experience it was the heat sensor which tells the ecu the engine temperature and adjusts the fuel/air ratio to suit - bit like a choke does. He said it would take minutes to fix so I took it there yesterday afternoon and had it changed under warranty. He also detected a misfire on tick-over and not having time to identify which cylinder it was changed all four ignition coils - no plug(HT) leads evidently - each plug has its own coil sat on top. It seems to have done something - the engine was idling faster when started up cold this morning and no lack of power problems- hopefully it's cured. Does your car have the fly by wire (solenoid) throttle linkage? that can cause reduced throttle response if it goes wrong. We have 3 1.8T's where I work and 2 have had theirs fixed. The car certainly went better on the journey back to the office.

I don't know if I have a fly by wire throttle linkage - How do I tell?

I got to the car last night drove home and it was perfect and also this morning.

With regards to the HT leads no wonder I could not find them!!!  

What area are you from - I want to get the car serviced but I am not talking it to a VW dealer, so I am looking for a local garage who specialise in VW/Audi

Gloucester/Cheltenham area ,but Listers @ Evesham (13 miles away) did the trick. Don't get to use the smaller garages, we have a mechanic who looks after the out of warranty cars and they get changed before the mileages get too excessive. I believe there is a garage at Gloucester called Richard Hulin who specialise in VW/Audi/Porsche who are non VW dealers (01452 502333).

If you have a cable like a bike's brake attached to your thottle pedal one end leading to the fuel injection the other, and it physically moves  when the pedal is depressed with the  ignition off, chances are it isn't  fly by wire and you have a "normal" setup.
Strange the car is now ok, that's the problem with these intermittent faults, no one believes you.

Problem returned - jerkiness at low speed - took it to dealer to get MAF sensor checked out - a fault found - pressure drop, not the MAF sensor - fixed today. It was a loose pipe on the turbo. The car went exceptionally well on the way back to work so fingers crossed - time will tell.

Hi All

My Golf 2000 V6 4Motion has started to cut out. Its done it twice now with loss of steering and brakes. No warning lights on the dash. Pull over, turn the ignition and drive away as if nothing was wrong. The second time I noticed I was in the provess of changing from 5th to 6th.

Does anyone have a definitive answer to this problem. Its bloody dangerous and I'm worried my wife may be driving the car next time and she may have even more difficulty driving a big lump of metal without power assisted steering or brakes!

Its going to Gilder's Sheffield next week for 'investigation' and forewarned is forearmed.....

dunno if there no lights on the dash!!, do you get oil and battery light come on??? if no lights at all looks like some kind of electrical fault or immobilizer prob!!, you need some one with a vagcom unit to see what faults are showing if any and go from there!!! these new cars arent as easy to suss ou as the oldies are they!!! lol
