8v gti won't start :@
« on: 07 January 2013, 17:38 »
Got a mk3 AGG, was running ok, replaced crap battery with new 1 today, was driving to college and I ran out of fuel :( so naturaly got a fuel can and went n filled it, after putting fuel in I turned ignition a few times to try pump some fuel n after many times it won't start, run the new battery dead trying!! So got the jump leads on from the van, recharged and still will not fire, its not even splutering or trying to fire! Just keeps endlessly turning! Any1 had this problem b4?

Do I need to take filter off and manually fill it with fuel?

Had the same problem on my 8v and turned out to be the ignition coil.Have you tried another coil or do you know how old the one on the car is.

Know how you feel m8.I got issues with mine cutting out for no apparent reason and happened in middle of town in rush hour  :embarrassed:.Not funny when everyone is piled up behind you.Had the coil go on mine and turned over but no spark at the plugs. If you can, unplug one of the plugs push it back into the lead and lie it on the engine block and get someone to turn the ignition over.If there is no spark then its gonna be the coil.
Good Luck bud.

Well had a VAGCOM diagnostics done on the car the weekend but didn't throw up any fault codes.Have been told that cus i cleaned the throttle body it needs to be re-calabrated with the ECU.Had an issue where it just cut out on me whilst driving but that was a faulty crank sensor which i have had changed.Car won't start again after stalling for about 20 mins, when the engine has cooled down.Weird !!!

Aww sore mate, feel for you there must be reall stressfull, my car been sat outside my house ove xmas and new year, never moved because battery wouldn't take a charge and starter motor was f**ked so today got a jump start and treated it to new battery and fixed the starter now this grrr 1 thing after another was only few week ago it blew the water flange off pft! Cars never been looked after, at least whilst I'm replacing things its slowly fixing everything, I baught the car with abou 10 month mot but I don't see how because its condition is almost like its been sat for years, everything was siezed or stuck and as soon as its being used all these problems are coming! But we all know ur car doesn't need to move off the drive to. get an MOT

For the cutting out issue, likely a knackered crankshaft sensor as its common for these to go, or either the ECU or fuel pump relay.

As for your car not starting, its a strange one considering it ran fine before.

cutting out should not be crank sensor anymore if that's already replaced. throttle does require adaptation after cleaning, this will have some effect on idling and can cause cutting out.

other than that fuel pump relay can be easily tested... pull it out get a 10cm piece of 1.5mm2 wire and two male spade connectors on the end. now use the wire to jump the two sockets where the THICK relay contacts would go... now fuel pump should run audibly. If the engine starts up with this in place, but with relay it doesn't then you know what's had it...

Yeah defo not the crank sensor. As for the fuel pump relay,i can hear it priming when i turn the ignition key. Both the fuel pump relay and ECU relay get warm after a while so don't think its either of those.Gonna get the throttle body re-calibrated on VAGCOM and see if the issue goes.
