Just bought a Golf 2.8 v6 4motion!
« on: 21 December 2012, 01:00 »
Very happy with it, isn't the best on fuel managed to get 27mpg upto now haha. Something that the seller didn't tell me is that it has an intermittent fault, the battery light illuminates and i lose power steering (normally at low speeds and when i turn to almost full lock) and also it sometimes flashes up *Alternator workshop!*. I'm inclined to believe this may be the serpentine belt? Are the steering pump and alternator spun using the same belt? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks Pez.

Pictures??  :cool:

Sounds like it could be multiple things;
First test your battery, check you auxiliary belt as this drives both your power steering and alternator, only thing is I would expect it to snap not stretch so also check the tensioner as that may be fcuked.

If all that fails it may be the alternator, you may get away with new brushes but off you you may need a new one.

Thanks for the replies :) I think it might have something to do with the wet weather we've been having because here in manchester the surface water has cleared from the roads and it hasn't happened since, maybe the belt was slipping due to moisture? I'll get some pictures up tomorrow, next on the list is a set of coilovers and ARB's because it feels like I'm steering a boat!  :grin:

I was the same but to be honest was just the suspension bouncy as hell never bothered with the arb but coils made a huge difference I diddnt have any luck with a cheaper arb setup cheapest I saw was h&r for 250quid let me know if you find cheaper but not sure you will need try the coils first

I'm not really sure how vagcom works, I read about it a while back. You buy a vagcom cable, vagcom software and plug your computer into the service port am i right?

Yeah I've been looking at some FK street coilovers (£200), can't afford anything ridiculously pricey. Where did you see the H&R ARB?  Cheapest I've found is a heitec ARB kit at 300 quid :(
