i thought if your wipers were on the front brakes 'dried themselves' by lightly applying themselves so wet brakes should be an issue in these cars?

Interesting, i thought that was only on cars with ceramic discs? Hmmm

It is on our cars too iirc. When the auto wipers detect rain the brakes gently "massage" the discs to clear them, so they shouldn't need dabbing manually, unless you don't have auto lights/ wipers on.

Does not explain the smell or wifes coments in the original post imo.

I can see the reasoning and have suffered brake issues due to wet discs in the past in certain conditions but it sounds too frequent and other things you have said make it questionable. :undecided:
It has just happened again. My wife tried it and agreed.

Today the brakes are fine again :undecided:

I did notice this morning that the passenger footwell light is flashing bright intermittently. Gremlins?

Mine has flashed the footwell lights occasionally they go from the 30% to full brightness and back again.  Only once in a blue moon mine and only flash once not over and over.

ABS pump on the way out?

Anything on the dash lighting up?
Nothing on the dash.

I wonder could it be the winter tyres picking up stones of the drive way? Though usually there is a rubbing noise when that happens. Reversing usually fixes that problem :undecided:

Next time it happens I will have to try and get it to VW asap.

It sounds to me like you need to get on to VW UK and arrange to leave your car with your dealers for a few weeks and let them rack up the miles and experience the problem for themselves. That would seem the only way forward in my opinion
