Help boost issue
« on: 12 December 2012, 00:56 »
Hello

I've just got a pd130 golf with 183k but I'm loosing boost somewhere at first I fort it was the pan cake pipe so I gaffa tapped the whole pipe to make sure but still got a leak I can hear a loud whistle when I get to 2k revs and its not pulling very well.

Also there is a pipe connected to the turbo that goes down towards to intercooler that is loose if going to tape that up and see what happens.

When I find the issue I will be getting a new part the tape is to track down the leak lol

Thanks

Ray

Chasing boost leaks... oh the joys of owning a TDI  its VW with those daft clip connections what were they thinking? that aside my advice is to remove the pipes clean them all up and inspect the lugs on the pipes, the seals and the clips for wear, the newer type seals are green so if you have black ones fitted replace them, also the clip at turbo used to have rounded edges and the new version has straight (meaning less likely for pipe to blow off by the lugs slipping past the clip) if that makes sense? the seals are 3-4quid each and the clips are all under 50p to just under £2 each

You hit limp mode. Were you boosting fine and then hit limp mode? That normaly happens when you request too much boost for a set period of time, the ECU reads this as dangerous as nothing is happening so puts your car into 'safe settings' mode.

This could be a sign of sticky VNT - http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=184800.0

Doing a proper job on it is detailed in the link I put up, ie removal and stripping of turbo.

You can diagnose it by checking if your actuator sticks when pushed under hand pressure - obviously it shouldn't stick down, should move up and down with no hassle. This is on the rear of the turbo, beneath your inlet manifold. (I'll dig out another good thread about a how to)

You can clean it using special turbo cleaner, innotec IIRC...Or you can use another method - Oven cleaner  :lipsrsealed:

I have used the oven cleaner method and found it worked as have many others. A far cheaper alternative to innotec, however I do not recommend it.  :lipsrsealed:

Well I done a 55 mile dual carriage way trip and even ever I tried to accelerate it would go into limp mode done it 8 times in total after the last time I have lost a huge amount of power (like driving with no turbo) done a scan once I got home and got two engine codes now

17964
16485

The first one is a boost issue but the second one is a maf issue would that be why I kept going no limp mode and the lose of power

Oh also found where th boost leak was. It was the intercooler it had a split in the lower casing that was letting air out got another one for £20 so didn't cost too much looking at a egr clean and possible amateur then take a trip to my local vw specialist to get the vnt's fixed or replaced.
