My inlaws have a Subaru Tribeca, which is a 7 seater softroader with a 3.0 V6. A luxury barge, it wallows around, uses too much fuel. It's got all the toys, sat nav, reversing camera, rear DVD player and the like.
Their justifications are that a) they use it for towing a caravan (so it does actually go off road) and b) my mother in law can't easily lower herself into normal height cars.
Frankly with a 70 yr old behind the wheel it's a tad dangerous, something that heavy with that much power and a driver that's not so good at spotting hazards

Personally I don't see the point. If you need the ground clearance to go off road, fair enough. But otherwise you might as well just get a better driving saloon or estate. And if you need 4 wheel drive for grip in snow or up hills or towing, just buy the 4wd version.
