Oil recommendations please?!
« on: 19 July 2005, 09:20 »
Hello there,

I'm about to change my oil and filter and was wondering if anyone could recommend me a good oil?

I've got a 1991 8v gti, should i use a semi synthetic or normal etc?

What rating would it be if I was to use a semi synthetic?

Any suggestions welcome!

Thanks guys, the.little.fox x

Everyone on here recomends a genuine filter from vag as they have a 1 way valve in them or something like that. Combined with vw's syntha silver oil. I dont know the exact details as ive not used them yet but im going to at the end of the month so would be gratefull if anyone could give the exact details of what to ask for at the vw parts desk. Cheers

That's the general consensus in here guys VW synta silver and OE oil filter from VW parts desk will have it in stock and should know what your after I'd advise a flush of your engine too.

i wouldnt flush a 16v ever. unless u know thats its been flushed every oil change since it was new!!

flushes just dislodges lumps of shít which then get stuck in oil ways etc

Oops!

I've just recently changed oil/filter on my valver. I flushed it first with comma engine flush.

Must admint though it isa lot quieter and smoother after the flush, so just hope I haven't dislodged anything.

VW Filter and Synta Silver oil have a made a massive difference to my noisy tappets - except for 10 secs or so on startup from cold they don't rattle now!!

Any idea how much this is going to cost me if I buy this VW specialist stuff?

Gambit - I want your wheels! There was a nice set in red on ebay the other day, went for £750! they were a bit silly in red mind.

Give them your engine code and they should give you the right one as there are different ones depending on engine codes

Know you de man but don't agree there Gambit an engine flush is the best thing I did for mine mate quiet as a mouse and the amount of sh!te that came out wouldn't have done the engine any good IMO I think engine flushes are a good way of clearing your oil ways out. Bit like a colonic irrigation!
