If you go into any VW dealer there will be a shelf with the Quantum Synta Silver and Quantum Synta Gold on it. I'd recommend, as already done so, to get a genuine oil filter and use Quantum Synta Silver (I think the Gold is more for the mk4  :undecided: ). As a price guide I think the 5ltr Synta Silver is about £18 and the oil filter will be about £4.50(ish) from VAG. You can also get the genuine parts from your local German, Swedish & French and that will save yourself a few quid.

VW oil filter, flush evey change, and Magnatec oil for me - guess everyone's got their own opinions on oil, but Magnatec silenced my tappets immediately, so that's what I use on my 8v with 113k. I do a change every 6K - seems to keep it running sweet!

Don't think anyone is saying that it is or there's anything wrong with other oils. I personally like to use the VAG stuff and would always recommend it, but each to their own and if castrol etc doesn't cause any problems then that's cool.

Gambit is 100% correct about caution when flushing an engine. You can really easily block oil galleries etc causing major trouble. Should only flush if your quite sure that oil has been changed flushed regularly as per schedule.

Oh and don't forget to get some copper washers for the sump plug from the dealer to replace the one on there if it has one.

Each to their own but i always flush my sh!t!

But surely it would only be a matter of time before it bunged the oilways up anyway? better to clear it out before it builds up? how does it block them anyway interested now as I have always flushed my engine every other oil change and never had any problems? would the filter not catch any crud and stop it circulating?
I have also heard the castrol high mileage oil is very good for our aged cars and magnatec breaks down very quickly?

I always flush mine and as for oil I just bung anything in thats lying about in the garage and I get a oil filter from Halfords.I don't think its that big a deal as long as you don't let it run out of oil or leave the same oil filter on for 5 years.
