1 inch of snow and SE Trains can't cope, they just don't know how to deal with it and since it only affects maybe 5 days a year, they don't think it's worth investing in solutions to keep the trains running.
This is how the Canadians deal with snow on the railways:
http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012/12/04/canadian-train-snow-plough_n_2236130.html

Even the USA can cope with real snow. I once few to New York in February, arrived just after a snow storm, the runways were clear, the highways were clear even though you could see the 4-5foot of snow at the side of the roads. They would just send a 3 snow ploughs down the highway in a line to clear the snow and do that every day on all the routes.
But of course, they have to deal with snow more often than we do, so they're bought more snow ploughs and hired more people to solve the problem.

Had an inch round here. Took the Golf with it's 400kg tank in the back handled snow fine. Drove straight up a steep hill fine got fairly decent tyre tread pattern fair enough but no idea why everyone drives at 20mph on completely clear 60mph roads and struggle so much. It's an inch ffs.

Because not everyone has the confidence to drive at 60 on a snowy road. I honestly wouldn't risk it, especially when my car has T1R's on. The reason that countries like Sweden and Norway cope with it is because they have much larger snowfalls and for longer periods, so their government make them use winter tyres, snow chains and other equipment, as well as the nationals grow up driving in the snow so they're used to it. In the UK people grow up driving on tarmac. Take that grip away and unsurprisingly people slow down to make up for the lack of experience.

I'm not bothered to be honest. I rather drive at 20 on a snowy country road too, because for the sake of getting somewhere quicker I risk not getting there at all.

Sorry when I say clear I mean a BIG wide 60mph road that was clear in the sense there was not the tiniest bit of snow on the road. TOTALLY TOTALLY clear. 20MPH. I find myself braking hard (if safe to do so) to just test the grip on roads in the snow and wet and it was fine.

Really winds me up, then saw a two car crash at my mates house I was traveling to and some plonk in a Focus goes flying down said hill which is steep and crashes straight into the two BMWs that had crashed. Morons.

Where all my moneys went.

Also had 1" snow here and was chaos.  Tried to make a local 7 mile journey on main roads but no chance!  Trip had to be abandoned.   Returned to city where roads were completely clear but everyone still driving at 10 mph and doing things they would never normally do.

Well it was abit Icey this morning and I saw a women!! in a fiat 500 she was driving in the right lane, I was in the middle and a lovely mk5 golf was in the left, she wanted to be where the mk5 was so she could join the slip road, so she thought it would be a good idea to (without indecating) cut me up, cut the mk5 up and No joke norrowly miss plowing straight into the wall as she went over chevons to enter the slip road....

I found myself shaking my head, and about 100 yards on I put my passenger window down and asked the poor 60-70 year old in the mk5 if he was ok, his reply cracked me right up. "bloody women drivers"
