We had about half an inch here and everyone turned into a blinking loony. No-one knows how to drive properly and nearly everyone was panicking, or late, or grumpy or generally stressed.

What the hell it's going to be like when more than an inch falls I dread to think. Perhaps I'll drive to work earlier and miss all the nutters...

Keeping schtum. Mostly.

Well I woke up with it snowing and the snow settling in the garden and I thought, "ah this is England, we only get 30min of snow and its prob 5c outside so it will not stay (I was right)". I looked at my motorbike then at the train station, followed by a short thought of, I bought the bike so that I would never use southeasterns train service, I rather ride the bike to work and die than use the train and I cba to sit in traffic with the golf. Got to work normally and thought what you thought, this country really slows down, my dad use to live in russia and kazakhstan and owned a bike and use to ride it non stop in all kinds of winter weather and then I look at the UK and go

Apparently some parts of the country has had some snow today, a couple of inches at most.

Loads of people late into work.
One even rang in and said the road out of his valley had been blocked by a Porsche that got stuck in the snow!

Why cant we cope with a bit of snow these days?

I remember 1963 when we had many feet of snow! I still went to school and my Dad went to work, the milk still got delivered daily etc. etc.

We can cope with snow, just as we did back in 1963.

Remember, back in the 60s etc, the level of commute wasn't as it is today. Today, people travel much further, so every little delay adds up. Back in the 60s, etc, there were more local jobs, local industry and many more people walked to work than they did today. There wasn't even an M25 and many other motorways back then.

Yes and there were far, far fewer cars than there are now!

But what I am saying is the roads were cleared, the Trains ran on time, essential services all carried on as normal.
These days a small flurry of snow and everything gets paralysed.

So how would you prevent this?

Had an inch round here. Took the Golf with it's 400kg tank in the back handled snow fine. Drove straight up a steep hill fine got fairly decent tyre tread pattern fair enough but no idea why everyone drives at 20mph on completely clear 60mph roads and struggle so much. It's an inch ffs.

Where all my moneys went.

Because not everyone has the confidence to drive at 60 on a snowy road. I honestly wouldn't risk it, especially when my car has T1R's on. The reason that countries like Sweden and Norway cope with it is because they have much larger snowfalls and for longer periods, so their government make them use winter tyres, snow chains and other equipment, as well as the nationals grow up driving in the snow so they're used to it. In the UK people grow up driving on tarmac. Take that grip away and unsurprisingly people slow down to make up for the lack of experience.

I'm not bothered to be honest. I rather drive at 20 on a snowy country road too, because for the sake of getting somewhere quicker I risk not getting there at all.
