bbs alloys and corrosion...

Hi folks, my MK4 has the optional 16" split rim bbs alloys (an expensive option i believe)

They seem to be a bugger on the outside rim, which isn't a painted finish and corrode very easily. MIne were refurbed about a year ago and are just starting to go again in a few places. Is there anything I can do to stop this? they look amazing right now, but fear that 12 months down the line they will need a refurb.

they're known for corroding.. even moreso with the anniversay wheels (bbs rc)

if you've already had them refurbed once then the best you can do is keep them as clean as possible and dont forget to wax them ! also be careful if you use any kind of blacking on your tyres, wipe any overspray off the wheels straight away.

Sorry to steal the thread here, but you have mentioned waxing your wheels, can you give a bit more information on what wax to use and what advantage there is from doing this.

there's probably specialist stuff you can buy, but normal clear car wax will work.. builds up a protective layer on the wheel surface.. you'll also find its a lot easier to keep them clean, brake dust just rinses off.

so something along the lines of autoglym extra gloss, or would you suggest a hard wax?

hard wax would be more durable, but obviously it would be a complete b!tch to apply to fiddly wheels like bbs splits

cheers, I'll give wax a go. The inner bits are fine (painted) the outer bits seem to be like an etched finish and have that whitey corrosion just starting in places.

Reminds of the wheels on late Scirocco Scalas and late Golf mk 2 cabs. They were notoriously bad too.
