Black Smoke
« on: 18 July 2005, 19:11 »
I went to start my car up yesterday and when I turned the key smoke started to come from behind the dash and it smelt of an electrical fire. And now my fog lights donÂ’t work. I checked the fuse for the fogs and, it had blown. When I got to work to day I took some of the dash out to trace the wires to the fog lights and they seam to be ok. Should a blown fuse cause smoke top come from behind the dash, or do I need to check the rest of the wiring loom for fried wires. :undecided:

But to be on the safe side I went out and bought a fire extinguisher today just in case

Shouldn't smoke when fuse goes at all that's why you have a fuse :) Bbut could be that whatever caused the smoke is what caused the fuse to blow usually a short circuit or old wires. The casing gets brittle and cracks, causing a short which makes hot wires which melts off the plastic casing, fuse goes, wire cools,  plastic cools and no evidence of a wire fire But best well check if not replace any affected wires if you have the ability.

unedited again!
Wouldn't want this happening!

Made me think twice about how wiring should be done~(well and carefully!)
Good buying on the fire extinguisher 1 should be in every car!

Not meant to be mate!
I'm biased Just had a mini and a Bora and a BMW M5 and a T25 van all set on fire whilst sat in them I'm either cursed or it's more common than it seems!
Kinda brings it home though doesn't it?
