I'm sure the 8V box will have much lower ratios. From memory, the Mk2 8V had a top speed of about 115mph at getting towards 6000rpm in 5th. The Mk3 16V had a top speed of 135ish mph at just over 6000rpm.

Your car would have been a flyer with the 8V box, but would run out of revs at big speeds. The ABF box will give you the opposite results.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

find the ratio's of the mk3 16v box and then compare them on this, there is a handy speed converter included :)

IIRC you can take the abf 5th and put it  in the 8v with difficulty... or am I thinkning of 16vs or a 4e? or have I made it up

So research into 8v box possibilities will be worth it

Yes but the reason for going cable-change is for a more durable box and stronger clutch.

To resolve the 'speed' problem you have you would need to replace the final drive in the CDA box with a shorter final drive.

If you're still running the 10kg flywheel, get that taken down to 6kg as well - will make a significant difference too.

What bhp/torque are you running on the 20vt?
If you gear it down now and increase bhp/torque later you will be in a similar situation.

No, I mean changing the final drive, which sets the gearing of the whole 'box.  Effectively you're making all of the gears shorter.

Good time to put an LSD in if you're that far down the 'box.

Find someone who builds boxes and talk to them about your requirements.
