Golf GTi Mk1 Cab Starting Problem
« on: 26 November 2012, 15:38 »
I've got an F reg MK1 Golf Cab, 1.8 GTi. It starts up from cold perfectly but when you take it for a drive, leave it parked up for awhile and come back to it, it struggles to start. So far it has eventually started after several turns of the key but I am reluctant to take it on long journeys or on stop start trips in case it won't kick up.

It has had many new parts including a head gasket, thermostat, timing belt, water pump, fuel pump, fuel pipe, alternator, spark plugs and injectors. Also, the battery is fine and fully charged, and there is plenty of fuel in the tank.

Thanks

Use search as this kind of issues have been covered before.

I would check all earth cables and relays, mainly the fuel relay.

So it never fails to turn over but does fail to fire when warm?

Warm up regulator?  Caused me similar issues, ran ok when cold and like a dog when warm until I changed it.

Take fuel relay out, sandpaper the connections and see if that helps. Pound to a penny it will be covered in plastic gunk from the fuse box.

Take fuel relay out, sandpaper the connections and see if that helps. Pound to a penny it will be covered in plastic gunk from the fuse box.

Then take a look inside the tank and check the in tank lift pump. A usual suspect  is crud and rust from the filler neck blocking the Gauze at the bottom, so the pump needs to draw more current and this also make the second under body pump work harder too. Replace the fuel filter as well. Check the fuel pump fuse is OK should be 15A. You can get an issue of the above blowing the fuel pump relay fuse so folks put a bigger fuse in which again draws more current.

Relay position 2 No 2
Fuse Position 5 15A Blue
