Guys need a bit of advice
« on: 20 November 2012, 15:28 »
Hi
Il try to make this as less longwinded as possible so here goes.

I bought a GTD earlier this year (privately) and it had an RNS 510 in it.

Anyway some weeks/months later I was having little issues. Such as the media freezing on system starting and media in general not being able to work. Or the navigation saying "please insert navigation dvd" even though the maps are installed on the HDD.

I went to VW about my problems cut along story short turns out the original unit was a RCD310 (or something similar). Therefore this unit has been retrofitted, so VW are not liable under warranty and as such will need to charge me for repairs.

My issue is that if they are not liable what are my options with regards to it?

Not personally come across these issues. I would post on vwnavi and/or gpsunderground as they have RNS510 specific forums. Worst case, you can get a replacement RNS510 for £500-600 off eBay. Best case? A firmware update might help. What version RNS is it? What firmware is it running?

Have to add that updating the firmware poses a risk of bricking the unit. I recently did it and bricked mine & I had to buy a replacement mainboard for £220ish and fit it. The bricked mainboard is currently in Germany while they try to flash it and recover it, so I can resell it on eBay and get back some of my money.

Have you tried contacting the seller?

Have you tried contacting the seller?

The unit had been retro fitted into a car that he bought privately by it's previous owner. I doubt the previous owner will want to know.

I think it would be a case of biting the bullet and buying a new one from a reputable source for the £5-600 mark. You can always sell the old one on for repair to get some money back.

Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Ok from what I know it's a version c manufactured in 2011.
The problem was it was running a lower firmware than it should have been originally, now it's running a 2660.
I'm worried about bricking it, and it maybe the unit is faulty I'm not sure.
Spoke to VW they go £2,000!

VW said they would charge me £60 to try a firmware update no guarantee that will work though, I don't want to spend money on repairs if they don't know how to fix it or if the unit is faulty.

Original owner is going to say not his problem I suspect when I get in touch.

If you bought the car privately I doubt there is any liability on the previous seller.

I had issues on mine where, when the ipod was changing tracks it would stutter or not update the display on the head unit with the new song. Mine was retrofitted but when I took the car in for a service, I told them my issues and they updated the firmware on the MDI and also on the head unit.
I wasn't expecting them to as I retrofitted it so maybe worthwhile trying another garage or trying when its in for a service.

Have you tried updating the MDI although it doesn't sound like that if the unit is asking for the navigation disk all the time. Or have you tried reinstalling the navigation disk? Worth a go.

Incidentally my problem with the stuttering playback when the songs changed was down to the settings on itunes.

To be fair phone, radio, settings nav (most of the time) work.
My issue is the mdi and the iPod, obviously the problem is I need some more diagnosis. But as its retro fitted VW will charge me 60 quid for the privilege and there's no guarantee.

Could be a firmware issue could be a number of things. :(

You obviously never read what i wrote properly,  VW upgraded my firmware on the RNS510 and MDI on the car for free even although I had retrofitted it.

Try another garage or wait till you have a service dues as they are more likely to do it then.

You can update your own MDI here http://www.my-gti.com/?s=mdi&submit.x=0&submit.y=0

This is what Im saying they said they would try a firmware update but will charge me for it.

Which MDI upgrade should I try should I go for the very latest one?
