I would say your have a bigger problem, my guess would be an assembly issue.

(Head gasket blocking an oilway maybe)

Have you connected the 'spindle thingy' that goes into the pump?

On my vr theirs an Allen key style spindle that goes up into the block and into the oil pump (what turns the pump)

That or their is a block somewhere. Take out the oil pressure switch and crank it over to see of anything comes out

ok so today i checked the oil cooler with the one fitted onto the old engine and its fitted the correct way.i started up the engine and took oil filler cap off and there is no oil splashing about at all. the head gasket was fitted the right way around, but would it be possible to fit wrong one ? the head set was for 2.0 16v abf, metal type gasket, could the gasket be wrong ? i dont really fancy taking  the head off just to find out that its ok. i was planing to check oil pressure at the switch with a guage. what pressure should it be when idling ?

If your capable of rebuilding an engine I think you would notice if the HG was wrong or on wrong. Oil & water galleries wouldn't line up. Nor the headbolts presumably?

Just take out the switch and see if anything squirts out, no dash warning?
