Dont think you will be happy with the 8v for long no matter what you spend on it.
I suggest you save your money up and buy a car with performance that will make you happy out of the box.
Mk3's will munch your money in the quest for speed and handling, you have to like them a lot

If your going down the engine swap route you have to go 1.8t for bang for your buck, or for a 3.2 VR if you have dosh.
The 16v is only slightly less underwhelming than the 8v and will cost a lot of money to add decent bhp let alone the hassle with Vosa and your insurance.
Just go out and buy a Mk3 16v for under £500....or something with a turbo already installed

Pretty sure boring a vr out to 3.2 isn't the cheap option

He stated he didn't want to sell his 8v, hence his original question
I did a VR conversion into my 8v, regardless of everyone saying 'just go buy a vr' and it was the best thing I did.
You will need
Engine
Loom
ECU
Gearbox
Cable shift linkage
Hydro clutch parts
Clocks
New engine mounts

PM me for a price on labour if you don't/cant do it yourself.
Hope this helps

I have a haggard 8v with holes in the floor and rust on every panel, however, I would NEVER get rid of her. I've had her for years and gone through loads, however, I will still do an engine conversion soon. Not sure if that'll be 1.8t or highly strung 16v yet though.
It's never to do with cost as we'd all be running standard cars and own things a lot more practical than mk3s but it's an emotional thing.
Although BenVictors replied because he wants to make some money (joke), at least he responded to the OPs question.
