mk2 golf gti not starting

hi i have a 8v golf gti mk2 i took the front end off and now it dont start with the front end off is there a reason or will it start when i put it back together do you think   
help!!! thanks

If it doesn't crank over then I bet you nocked the starter motor wire 

Ignition on then you can always bridge the thick red wire terminal on the starter to the red/black wire terminal.

no it does not and when i did there was little puffs of smoke coming from the engine bay,that could be why i will have a look and get back thanks mr blue.

it was the starter motor has completely gone thanks for your help
