Radio Antenna Amp
« on: 14 October 2012, 02:24 »
Just wondering if the Mk3 GL was fitted with an antenna amplifer for the radio?
Car had bog standard radio/cassette player and radio performance was pretty mediocre.
Changed in an Alpine unit with CD/MP3 etc, but radio performance is still pretty poor.
I've had the rear roof lining down and had a quick look to see that the antenna is connected and it appears okay. Tried a longer antenna temporarily but performance only improved marginally.
I don't have a proper wiring diagram for the car - only aftermarket which is pretty poor.
But many german cars with rear roof mounted antennas have inline antenna amps so I was wondering if the Golf did and where it might be located. Then I can start from there.

Okay - thanks. That confirms then that its probably not a fault, but inherited in the car design.

So an inline booster will be the solution. Looking on eBay there are basically three types - the inline requiring the antenna cable to be cut and DIN plugs soldered in back close to the antenna, or the sharks fin with inbuilt booster, or there's a long antenna rod similar to the OEM antenna with inbuilt amp in the base.
Has anyone had experience with the the shark fin style or OEM style replacement?
