Unstable after 85 miles
« on: 12 July 2005, 13:59 »
Hi,
I have a VW Golf MK1 GTi Cabriolet and have the following questions..
- You can feel the heat coming into the car around the feet (both driver and passenger). Is this normal?
- Driving above 85mph makes the car a bit unstable. Steering starts to shake mainly. Anyone experience this? Any idea whats wrong with it?

Regards
Randeep

I'll try...

First question - Going to ask - is your heater set to hot position and to the lower tubes - this will produce heat to both driver and passenger feet area.
Second question - I've experienced that - had the wheels balanced and set wheels to the correct pressure. Could also be your front wheel bearings.

When I bought mine, it had been sitting aorund for a couple of years, and althought the tyres had good trea don them, I had quite a lot of wheel wobble over 70mph. I took my car to a tyre shop to get the wheels balanced and the guy told me not to bother. He said if a car's been sitting for ages then the tyres get flat spots, I guess the rubber or silicone compound in the tyre 'creeps' or flows rather like a ball of plasticine (but slightly slower), and you end up with a non uniform weight distribution. So for me the first thing I'll try is new tyres when I get round to forking out for them.
