aha. that makes sense.

this guy must be wrong then...http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5467497-How-to-build-a-relatively-inexpensive-reliable-powerful-2.0-8v.

Yup. Judging by the way he wrote that article too it seems he doesn't know much either.

Stuff that £50 to trick the ecu in to over fueling to advance ignition timing ? I think I'll pass

Well it doesn't trick the ECU into anything.

It's a map that uses the standard AFR trace but adds a bit more fuel at certain points, smooths it out in others. It advances the timing further than the maximum capable using the standard chip and it also raises the rev limiter a bit more. Not needed for 8v's, but a great gain for a 16v.

not needed for 8vs - do you mean just the raising of the rev limiter? I know it peaks way before it hits red anyway

also just wondering khare, do you know if a different 8v Ecu will work with my agg engine? ie non soldered.. long shot but it could be cheaper than soldering - cheers

Yes I meant the rev limiter increase on the 8v is pointless.

And no, the early 2E ECU is designed for a different management system, it won't work. Your chip is specially designed to be soldered in, push fit chips are a different size and fit.
