Golf mk2 GL/Driver Auto reliablity

DVLA has limited me to automatic because of my torn knee and ongoing toe infection since 2010, I really want a MK2, I for some reason hate modern cars, 80% electric, computers etc. Sadly I can't get a GTi & there is no way that I can drive a manual anymore, I've seen many automatic parts readily available. I'm looking to at least build a GTi replica, are the GLs & Drivers in auto good cars even in this day and age?

the auto mk2's are one of the least appealing mk2's to new drivers or boy racers so have likely never been ragged or driven hard, the fact it's an auto given the way the "older generation" drive grinding gears and staying in 3rd at 63mph down the motorway and riding the clutch then you won't have any of these issues with the auto, that said, the driver in general is a cracking little car, if you get the 1800 then it's pretty much already a GTI replica, they were given the quad lights and arch trims of the gti for less money, if you get anything carb related make sure the first thing you do is get rid of the pooburg carb for a webber if it's not already been done, other than that it's just the usual mk2 things to look for

Awesome, most useful person alive!! I've had a mk4 gti which was good to cruise in, I don't see myself hammering for power anyway, having 2 lil ones, I gotta be careful with my driving. What are the service intervals?

depends how inclined you will be to do it lol

iirc manufacturers stats say 10k miles or 12 months, whichever comes first, the engines are the same regardless of the box fitted, the auto box will need oil changes too, not sure how often though

i used to change my oil every 5k or when i bought a new engine, which ever came first, and gearboxes rarely did over 2k with me before the diff rivets came through the bell housing, thats more my manner of driving though not all the blame can be put on the parts lol

Aha! Can't wait to go old school, hunting for any auto mk2 is tougher than I thought, though I have time, I wouldn't mind a 1.6 Driver or 1.8 GL, for me they both cost the same to insure. At the end of it, it'll be a nice little replica. Nice people on this forum.

They are out there, and the likelihood is it will be a minter, due to the nature of the previous owner/s
If in doubt about the box, id try and sort out some sort of inspection via a reliable Auto trans specialist... clean bill of health, or walk away!

I really like the second link, cracking example, the 90s look really is unique, red would be ideal, my favour colour, though I wouldn't mind it in white, grey or black. I should own one by late February.

What's the average urban fuel consumption like on a 1.6 & 1.8?
