MOT failure
« on: 14 September 2012, 15:50 »
Took the golf in for an MOT today after being SORNd for 6 months.
It failed on a few things.

The worst of offences was a leaking brake hose, I took the O/S rear wheel off and could see the fluid leaking out from where the hose meets the calliper. There's a 10mm (IIRC) nut holding it in place and what I guess is a tensioning clip of some sort which was loose, but the nut couldn't be tightened (although I didn't want to try too hard)
This brake was also binding (another reason for failure) which they thought could be calliper problems.

The clip travelled way too easily in comparison to the N/S one, could this be the reason for the leak?

Another reason for failure was the N/S parking brake "recorded little or no effort".
When I went to check out the handbrake adjustment nut it was quite loose, possibly threaded as it didn't come in our out when loosened or tightened. Not sure how I'd go about sorting this in time for the retest Tuesday  :undecided:

Also need a bloody rust patch welded on one of the seat belt anchor points  :undecided:

Anyone got a clue on the cost of the welding? And anyone think of any solutions to the brake dilemma?

As for the handbrake, check the caliper to see if either the cable has snapped or the mechanism it attaches to is seized. Mechanism can be freed by a good soaking usually.
If the nut or thread on cable is threaded and you can't get it off prob easiest to cut cable out and replace, gsf do them and they're easy to fit.

Replace flexi pipe and replace both calipers with a pair off a Golf3 ones, as the handbrake mechanism is internal and much less prone to seizing.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Cheers!
Looking into that! Local ASM want £40 per caliper  :undecided:
Will continue with my search!

Just need to find a welder that can do my rust for cheap now.
The tester said the rust was on the underside by the passenger seat belt mount, but when I looked it was a 100mm X 50mm patch near the sill as opposed the centre.

Welding price is dependent upon how bad the rust, where it is and how easy it is to access. Post a pic.

Slapping a small patch on a sill to pass an MOT is easy and fast and would only be £20. If things are rusted through in quite a large area and are a bit awkward and fidly it could cost more like £70+
AEROSPACE GRADE CNC MACHINED VR6 KEYRINGS. ONLY £16.50 INC P&P.

Mitching - mk4 calipers of GTFO. mk2/mk3 have caused endless problems.

MK4's have been reliable but you do need the banjo lines from goodrich.

Fit those. job done.

Cheers guys!

Unfortunately I couldn't source anything in time so had to rely on the bloody garage to sort it out.
New O/S caliper and some welding and it passed its retest. Bloody expensive though  :embarrassed:
Suppose it teaches me for promising to pick the girlfriend up from the airport before I'd even got it properly back on the road yet
It does feel good to be back after 6 months though  :nerd:

Now I just have to worry about a cambelt and possible gearbox change....
