Hm I don't get it. Are you saying the "bowl" which normally rests in the hole and seals it is actually inside the transmission casing? I can only kinda see the cog in your first pic...did you have the lip screwed into the transmission? Where is that lip, or did you slide it up the cable out of the way?

Edit:

I'll try and find a pic, definitely seen one somewhere.

But, looking through the hole, at the bottom is a little round recess where the tip of the plastic gear "slots" into, the gear rest on the gear inside the casing and spins...

If you did not have any securing on top, wouldn't there be oil spilling out everywhere? Was nothing in place on the top, just the hole?

Edit2:

Thought it was on broke...here this should help:

yes it had a metal cap with a single bold on one side i undid and slid it up the cable.
if you look at the pic of mine you see the ring around the hole well that is raised about a quater or a mm and inside the hole about 1 & a half cm's down there is a metal base with a small hole in the middle the cable goes through.
it is now a hole deep enough to have the worm gear go into like the ones in your pic so the cap/bowl or what ever the real name for it is must be that what ou can see.

mine dont apear to have that black plastic cap on top of the metal bowl bit tho
