red oil lamp flashing and buzzer 1.8t AGU
« on: 08 September 2012, 15:23 »
recently serviced my car and put in 5w 40 fully synthetic oil and a new K&N oil filter, and earlier i had a red oil lamp flashing saying low oil, i checked oil after 15 mins cool down and it was half way on dipstick ?? so topped it up a littlle bit to full, i rang a friend who is a vw mechanic, and he told me i shouldnt use 5w 40 fully synthetic oil as it gets to thin once warm and sets off the sensor ? but ive topped up now and took it on a test drive and it seems ok ?  the fans arnt running to say the engine is overheating or anything ? got a little bit of power loss when oil light came on i dont no if this means the engine went into safe mode ? can anybody help me please

you don't have a low oil level warning, you have a low pressure warning

As Wazzzer said it's an oil PRESSURE warning light, which means either the switch has failed or your oil pump.

Your mechanic saying don't use 5w40 - stay clear of him when it comes to oil, he has clearly no idea....

Low oil pressure seems to be caused by a blocked pick up pipe (generally anyway).

yep pick up pipe is worth replacing, doesn't cost much in comparison to a new engine. Might be worth replacing the switch too

When this happened to me it was the pick up pipe! Def worth changing, I had to get another engine because I didn't realise what it was :(

Why change oil pump? It's gonna be pick up pipe and 540 is fine iWork for vw and it's what most cars get
