The short time from Mk5/6 to Mk7 is down to cost. Hence new QNX platform development. It is well publicised that the Mk5/6 chassis platform is very expensive to make and has a long lead time.

The quick Mk7 introduction is simply down to profitability and lead time.

Technology is also moving at a much faster pace too, so they need to "keep up with the Jones" as it were. Might as well reduce production costs and update the look of the car at the same time as being able to shove more tech in.

Personally I think it looks a lot like a Polo / Rocco mix.
Passat B5.5 2.3 V5 170, with all the extras.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

All those detection and assistant features, and especially "Speed Limiter", do not bode well.

Assuming the speed limiter is the same sort of system as that found in a Nissan then its a useful bit of kit, especially when driving in an unfamiliar area.

Agreed, plus there's a lot more competition from other car manufacturers, whereas back in the day VW were the first to produce a proper hot hatch and were miles ahead.

has anyone else noticed that the lifespan of each variant is getting smaller and smaller... the difference in years between model releases goes something along the lines of 9, 8, 6, 6, 5, 4.. hardly seems worth it... especially after you have to wait so long for one with the special lights and checked seating combo that you ordered... and the GTi came out even later didn't it?

makes the point of owning a new GTi seem even more pointless

I think this could come down to the fact cars can be designed, tested and manufactured much quicker than they ever could previously.  I read somewhere that Toyota have design to forecourt down to around 1-2years.  That's pretty impressive stuff considering the complexity of cars and the rigorousness of H&S these days.

I take most news like this with a pinch of salt... As said, I will wait for the official release... I am eager to see if it will live up to the job of being my new daily driver for next year as I will be giving up the Mazda in April.  Can't believe I've had it for three and a half years already!

I had a mk5 and enjoyed it very much but I was put off the mk6 as it didn't come across as good value to me when the time came to change cars.  I ended up being a traitor and chose a Mazda 6 over the Golf as the £20k Mazda gave me everything you want from a car and it lived up to it's expectation, the golf came with nothing.  I hope the 7 is better equipped as standard, fairly priced and not look as dull as the current Passat.
