Popping exhaust and rough idling
« on: 25 August 2012, 02:00 »
Hi all

Today I noticed for the first time my 8v GTI was not idling as well as normal.  Also there is a lot of exhaust popping when coasting in gear, way more than usual. This may be a coincidence (as I have never actually had to sit in traffic in the car before) but I drove the car 100 miles today and sat in 2 traffic jams and I felt a bit of heat around the hand brake; it was quite hot underneath the carpet around this area, could this be a sign of the car running rich and the exhaust getting hotter than usual?

I appreciate your help as usual,

Pedro

Just removed the blue temp sender while idling and I can confirm the revs dropped

Any more ideas?

Thanks

Had a better look today to check for air leaks and found this which is probably causing the problem?

I changed the gromit that was perished in that picture and all is now sorted.  The car is idling fine, the exhuast has quitened down when idling and backfires when cruising just the right amount now :)

Where did you get the grommet from?
