happy days

as for the service history thing. id rather buy a car with reputable service history from a VW specialist rather than a dealers. how many VAG dealer garages still have people trained in k-jet?

I have a very good local VW specialist

With my last Mk2 the local VW dealer suggested I go elsewhere as they did not carry parts - quite politely but the message was clear that they did not want the car . Seriously and that was 6 years ago at least

No intention of selling in any case and the premium is not worth it

Point taken though

No Surprise there then...

I pay £125.00 for a full fluid service once a year from a VW Specialist & a M8 (No mate Rates on service though)...

Hardly a fortune and he only use's VW parts and oil & coolant!

Worth £100.00 just for the stamp IMO....

Always a keeper 'til you get bored!!

Bored? Not really

I have two other cars that keep me amused - I just add cars rather than sell

Fancy a Corrado Storm now I am back in VW mode !!

A friend of mine has a fairly new Polo (07 plate) He knows nothing about cars but has always had VW's. He took it for it's first service to the VW garage he bought it from. Amongst other things an oil change should have been undertaken. They managed to drain the oil, put a new sump plug in then not fill up with oil. My mate drove a few miles and the engine seized. Did they accept any responsibility??? No! It took him over a year to get them to accept partial responsibility and pay 50% of the cost of a replacement engine. Needless to say he now uses a specialist or independent.
In my view and in many other peoples view main dealer does not guarantee quality, it is purely for the stamp. A specialist is always happy for your custom and happy to service and maintain older cars without ridiculous labour costs.
If you have a rare, exotic car worth hundreds of thousands with barely any mileage then the stamp is worth it.

Service history only matters to cars in that sort of condition and price.

As long as it is serviced I don't think people would expect VW to still be doing it, a specialist is IMO a better service as they know the cars, problem you may share with me is when and how much service work done, how much servicing is required after 12 months and 400 miles?

IMO a full service every 12 months.... all the fluids changed, for what it costs whats the issue???

You have a genuine lower mileage car 103K & Damien even lower - you are prepared to spend £1000's on a set of alloys or to buy the car.... But wont spend £125.00 to get it serviced properly... Not only that you could be devaluing your car by not having a service stamp or invoice in your folder, so why buy such an expensive/low mileage car in the 1st place... Might as well bought my missus car with 175K on it and no service history and saved £2.5K to waste on sh!te....

Say's it all in my mind.....

We all buy VW Golfs for different reasons
I want a totally standard Mk2 16v as it left the factory. Hopefully all is original including the radio
The standard Mk2 is a classic car in the making (if not now alongside the MK1)

A VW specialist knows MK2s much better than a VW main dealer who looks after modern cars with plugin diagnostics

When I come to sell the buyer will be like me , be after a standard MK2 with a very strong history of being well looked after

Its coming down next Saturday/Sunday so looking forward to being back in a MK2.
