I have a Manfrotto 055XPROB with the following heads;
808RC4 (3 way)
496RC2 (Ballhead)
303SPH (Multi-row pano)

If you've only going to buy one head then a ball head is probably the best bet, very flexible but generally doesn't off the precision / fine tuning of a 3 way

You should be able to find deals on the Manfrotto + head deals.

Redsnapper are a very good value alternative

Have a read through http://www.bythom.com/support.htm and consider if it's worth paying the extra for something that you can grow with.

If your budget is a bit smaller, you could go for a compact Manfrotto for £40:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Manfrotto-MKC3-P02-Compact-Photo-Kit/dp/B0049SVU26/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=IFHX74AZZXGB&coliid=I52L9LEHXMKHS

with a weight limit of 1.5Kg you're limited to entry level bodies and the smaller lenses so depends what you're shooting with.

I bought a similar one (H01 instead of P02) as a spur-of-the-moment purchase from Argos (was supposed to buy one in advance but forgot).

Positives: very light - feels lighter than my G12 camera; portable - can shove it in my backpack; easy to se up and use - takes seconds to set up; comfort - the handle is comfortable
Negatives: the ball joint means it's impossible to get the camera absolutely level; it's not easy to keep the camera horizontal when panning

If it simply had a couple of spirit levels built in, I'd have been happy. I'm looking at buying one of those spirit-level cubes that fit into the hotshoe of the camera.
