MK3 Door speaker waterproofing and sound deadening
« on: 20 August 2012, 00:30 »
I've got some 2 way components to go in the doors with the tweeters in the dash. When i took the door cards off i noticed there was no plastic or anything to protect the speakers from moisture, i have glued and gaffa taped some plastic over the back door card speaker area (see pics) and was wondering if this will be sufficient to protect the speakers and also not detract too much from the acoustics? I was thinking maybe stuffing the door card speaker recess with some kind of wadding or other sound absorbing material to deaden the sound?
Any thoughts, comments or ideas would be greatly appreciated
thanks
Guy

That's not what you should be doing. The speaker uses the door as an enclosure. You can get a type of foam that does what you want, and still allows sound through. Can't remember what they're called but I fitted them a while back to the lupo doors.

Edit. It's called skinz moisture guard but apparently you can use reticulated foam from eBay that's the same.

That wont help the awful sound the front doors already produce. The door isnt air tight, so its not the best enclosure. You want some wave diffusers in the door behind the speaker and then bolt the speaker in with moisture guards.

I have found these packs which seem good value for money?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Silent-Coat-Starter-Set-Car-Sound-Deadening-Proofing-/190673036612
they include a moisture guard sheet, a diffuser sheet and 4 sheets of sound deadening. How would i best apply this in the doors?
Thanks
Guy

Id probably buy a couple to make sure you get sufficient coverage. Take the door card off, and cover the inner and outter skin. Go over the wires aswell to stop them vibrating, find anything else that will vibrate and do that aswell. Ideally you want to use a heat gun to get the deadening soft enough to mold around concaves ect. And once its down you wont be getting it back off.

I've gone for 8 sheets of the silent coat deadening for £20, i'll double up behind the speaker and get some moisture guard to put over the back of the speaker if moisture becomes a problem. Will update with pics at some point.
Thanks

Why are you so worried about moisture?
Are you doors riddled with rush?

Theres some slimy stuff at the bottom of the inside of the door and there is no plastic skin, the car will also be sat for a fair amount of time without a cover and i have already had a damp problem in the car as it is. But I'll see how it goes, it may or may not be necessary.
