RNS510 Firmware Update 3810 / 4020
« on: 17 August 2012, 00:10 »
PLEASE NOTE NEITHER I OR GOLFGTIFORUM WILL BE RESPONSIBLE IF YOU UNDERTAKE THE PROCESS DETAILED BELOW AND SOMETHING GOES WRONG. YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK

Firmware 3810. It took about 50 minutes and upgraded successfully.

I had a Revision C unit and was previously running 2660 firmware:

I now have a "Version Information" menu item when I hold down the "Setup" button. When I click this it shows the following:

Delivery part number: 1T0035680D
HW-Version: H06
SW-Version: 3810
Active map coverage: West Europe
Active map supplier: Navteq
Map version DVD: 7074

The firmware upgrade deleted the maps and music on the HDD so i just reinstalled the V6.1 maps and added some music.

Nice new VW logo on startup and updated graphics and animation.

I followed these instructions and got the firmware from here:

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,23779.0.html

I used the windows 7 to write the disk ( Maxwell DVD + RW ) or rather the image and had no problems with the install, it took around 50 mins.

Firmware 4020.

As above, took around 1 hour this time though, at first no controles on the steering wheel worked and the bluetooth module was missing but a reset after install put everything back.

My System now looks like this:

Delivery part number: 1T0035680D
HW-Version: H06
SW-Version: 4020
Active map coverage: West Europe
Active map supplier: Navteq
Map version DVD: 7074

This is the sourse i used for the Firmware 4020

Theses are the differences from FW3810

1: NEW Faster navigation and user interface
2: NEW Automatic illumination control
3: NEW Enhanced destination input

1: The map scrolls smoother and faster in 4020.
2: Until now I haven’t tried it in twilight/darkness etc.
3: It’s faster when you enter cities/addresses etc.

Depends on your maufactured date fella, try and press and hold the setup button for around 15 seconds and that will get you to the sub menus on your RNS.

One thing I have noticed is that DVD+RW or DVD+R are the most reliable disc type for updating both firmware and maps.

I have had mixed success with DVD-R and DVD-RW and CD types.

Hopefully this thread might lead to a couple queries I have regarding upgrading the RNS510 firmware, long time reader but casual contributor.

Recently I updated the Navigation Maps to a new version, but it did not come with the Speed Camera's POI. So from advice on another thread here I purchased an SD Card, downloaded the Speed Camera database and tried to upload it to my RNS510 but the option wasn't there. My firmware was out of date (2760).

I read up on how to update the firmware, but from reading various posts I got scared off from doing it for fear of 'bricking' the unit. My main concern is with compatibility, I can access the Setup menu but I couldn't see how to find out what revision the unit is. I suspect it will be a fairly old one as the car is a 2009 plate.

Any advice on finding the unit revision? Not really keen on pulling the unit out of the dash unless I have too!

Funny enough mine was an old unit or rather is, you can do it using VAGCOM, but seeing as i didn't have mine to hand i removed the unit, its only a plastic cover and 4 screws, pretty simple really

I have a Dec 09 on a 59 plate and cannot seem to update the maps. When I put the DVD +R in, it acknowledges the fact that a nav disc has been inserted and asks if I want to save or read from the disc and then nothing happens. It's been in today for 2 hours without success.

Is there an issue with the units being able to read certain disc sizes ? The v7 I had was ok on a 4.7gb DVD+RW but this is a 8.5GB disc

Is it the RNS510 and what version number fella?
