I have a 2001 1.8GTI and it does the same mate. It seems to have got a little better over the last few months (Weather related????), it does seem worse when it has been raining for some reason??  I've also changed MAF sensor, Plugs, Thermostat, Fuel filter, various lengths of pipe, de-cat. Engine management light keeps coming on, code something to do with thermostat. I reset the code and sometimes it can go 3 weeks before the light comes on again, some times it can come back on with in a hour???

 VERY STRANGE

only thing`s i have not done is

replaced the o2 sensor

checked the crankshaft sensor

changed the fuel pump

coil packs seam to be fine

reading through the 1.8 trouble guide does anyone think it could be the o2 sensor

When my crankshaft sensor died or what ever happened to it i got a code popup .I didnt even know there was something wrong. Car drove fine. You say the ignition amp made it better ?
Have you got the alloy heat shield on the amp.

AGU 1.8T. Mods done: R32 front bumper, turborev smic, ngk platinum spark plugs, uprated pancake pipe, demon motorsport boost hoses, forge 007 dv, forge engine cover, r-tec stage 1 map ,home made cold airfilter ,run on 98 ron fuel and castrol edge 0w 40 oil. Advanti racing alloys.

heat shield is there

there is no fault codes

a mate of mine hinted that it could be the crankshaft sensor

i think it might be the o2 sensor

everytime i take the plugs out they are black

i clean them and the car is fine

2 or 3 days later it`s back to the same

it`s driving me crazy

They should be a light brown or grey. What plugs you using ? Iv test loads of different plugs on the AGU engine. Most were black and sucked ,one set over heated and died .You cant beat ngk platinum PFR6Q perfect color (light brown) +spot on performance. The black sooty ones dropped power and would jurk on boost up a hill abit , i had to change them as to much soot they would of stopped sparking (had this with my old ford ,choke stuck on). If a crank sensor is cheap replace that as it says when to spark. On ford you could take it out and clean the clutch dust off the sensor. It sounds like the sparks your problem or somethings making it run to rich.  :undecided:

i have tried different plugs
currently running the PFR6Q
no matter what plug i fit it doe`s the same thing
if i take them and clean them it`s fine for 2 days or so
then its starts again

plug colour when i remove them = black

where  is the o2 sensor located
will it be easy to remove or are they a nightmare to get out
