Can run flats be fitted to non run flat wheels
« on: 06 August 2012, 22:15 »
Quick question, I can get hold of some cheap part worn  run flats for my current wheels, but will they fit. I can't seem to find a sensible answer apart from they are not recommended as you may not know when you have a puncture as no tire monitoring pressure system exists on cars that initially never had run flats. My car is hardly used and its only a precaution measure to get some cheap tires for the mean while till I can get something in a few months time.

Thanks for any answers in advance

Thats my understanding Toby, I'm sure it cannot fail an MOT either, think you just get an advisory as well from reading this?:

Any more light on info is highly appreciated, especially the MOT Side

simple answer is no. Plus they cost a hell of a lot, and once you get a puncture, they are scrap!

You sure they won't fit, I can get 4xrunflats for £80 with 4mm tread. Plus I see a mk4 on piston heads with runflats on normal rims?

You get the extreme answers with runflats, its either yes - but at a risk due to no tire pressure system or at the other end its nope, they won't fit at all! I am completely baffled. As a temp measure I'd be happy with them and if they flop from a puncture I'll get a new pair to replace accordingly.

Any more views?

Spoke to two tyre places this morning and both have said runflats will fit onto non runflat rims with no problem. Interesting as mr internet seems to have a generic answer of, no, you cant and only a 20% answer rate of yes you can.

I fit tyres for a living. Run flat wheels have a different bead seating area than normal wheels for normal tyres

I was told this, but apparently you can still get a run flat on a normal rim?

You would probably get them on, but they wouldn't work as a run flat, the bead would pop off. Run flats are designed so that you can still drive for around 200 miles at no more than 50mph.

I used to be a tyre fitter and used to have run flats on a old rover I used to own and never had any issues just aslong as you keep a eye on them and if you're only using as a temp measure wouldn't be a prob but as said once u have a puncture they are scrap as you can not repair them and also you can buy cheap tyre sensors that go in normal alloys if your really worried
