cabrio roof not working
« on: 05 August 2012, 19:29 »
hi again,
sorry last question, i wouldnt keep asking if you wernt such a knowledgeable bunch!
my mk3 cabrio has an electric roof but it isnt working.
should it be possible to put it up and down without the electric working? currently it wont open manually, didnt know if its just stiff but didnt want to break it.
also any ideas where to start and where the motor is located?
thanks again!

If you check the manual, I am sure you need to open a bleed screw first before raising it manually

The motor is located in the passenger side of the boot behind a plastic panel, you should never operated the roof manually as you could pop a ram seal.

PM send

have PMd dubstar9 but if he doesnt get it before i get down to my local motor factors i just wanted to know if im going in the right direction...

i have tested the 2 red wires that go into the relay, one red wire has a current going through it with the ignition on and off and one doesnt have a current at all. does the current go in through one red wire and out the relay with the other one therefore pointing at the relay being at fault?
if you touch the red wires together with the ignition on the pump makes noise, guessing this is a good thing?
where do i go from here? new relay?

You also need to see if there is a live feed from the dash switch in both directions, press the switch down and one wire will become live, press it up and another wire will become live. These wires switch the main lives in the relay, from the relay you have a thick red wire and a thick black, these reverse live and negative to power the motor in one direction (up) and then in the opposite direction (down).

If you already have the main battery (ignition) live, thick red into relay and lives from the switch in up and down directions and the connections under each side trim panels are plugged in then I think you relay isn't switching and not feeding to motor. If you have bridged the thick red wires and the motor powered up then the motor is fine, try bridging the thick red in and the thick black out to see if the hood moves back.

Keep going, your getting there

PM'd you this also :smug:
