Newbie 2.0 GTI
« on: 01 August 2012, 23:27 »
Hi all I wanted a second car that was able to overtake as my new SMAX is sluggish and nothing compared to my 2010 Dodge RAM that I was made to sell!

Anyway!  I picked up a V reg 2.0 GTI for £500, all seems okish faults that I discovered were:

Brakes judder slightly
When pulling away at low speeds I get the same juddering feeling
Boot won't open from the outside
Clutch feels slightly high but nothing untoward

Also I noticed that the oil seemed very new looking which surprised me a Little tbh.

Any quick fixes or parts I could pre empt before I take it to the garage would be much appreciated.

Admittedly I didn't research the model much but 115 BHP seems a little under powered for a car that boasts a GTI badge?  Do drop in airfilters change this at all?

Brakes judder slightly - I would say check your Discs could be warped.
When pulling away at low speeds I get the same juddering feeling - Again could be warped discs.
Boot won't open from the outside -  Common mk4 fault, require new lock.
Clutch feels slightly high but nothing untoward - Sounds like the clutch could be going should be a low bite.

Also I noticed that the oil seemed very new looking which surprised me a Little tbh. - Might of recently been serviced :)

Admittedly I didn't research the model much but 115 BHP seems a little under powered for a car that boasts a GTI badge?  Do drop in airfilters change this at all? - the 2ltr GTI is slow to be honest mate, a pippercros pannel filter usally add about 30% more air into the engine which for my 1.8T did help with response abit :)

Your right it is underpowered and doesn't deserve to be called a Gti at all, although for £500 I guess you can't grumble too much.

The boot is a common fault, the mechanism can seize. Try spraying some wd40 in the lock and see if that frees it, does your rear washer work? The piping often comes apart and it leaks onto the microswitch in the handle.

Are the discs warped or are any of the brakes binding?

I wouldn't worry about the clutch unless it is slipping.

I'm guessing fresh oil isn't a problem?

Nino beat me to it - Bugger!

.....the call our golf 2slow for a reason
IMO I would sell it and get a 1.8t

As to the other things
The 2.0l is know or eatin oil so keep it topped up
Discs may be warped or worn? Will have to just check
Also check your engine mounts and all yor subframe bolts etc (anything that can come loose)
As for the bot will have to strip the handle most like but Ido t know
And for the clutch maybe try bleeding it if. It it may just be the clutch that is worn

The oil could look fresh because it uses so much it being constantly topped up  :lipsrsealed:

Jeez guy's thanks!  warped brakes is something I've had before and yes it feels the same, is it worth getting top notch brakes or just get the standard, seen lots on the bay.

The boots a pain though, I didn't want to offend anyone by saying it has no right to be called a GTI (even new)  But I was used to a 5.7 Hemi @ 400bhp so everything feels slow at the moment

I mainly got it to teach the frau to drive and I refused to do it in a corsa etc!

I wouldnt bother with ebay brakes unless ur buying brembo but unless u plan on taking that car to iver 300bhp id just get stock replacements, also change your brake pads while your at it, btw your new GTI is your new money pit, welcome to the forum btw :)

Yup, standard replacements will be fine. Eurocarparts sponsor the forum so you can get a 25% discount on parts, see their section at the bottom of the homepage for more info
