Mk2 ISO adapter
« on: 01 August 2012, 20:38 »
Am a bit of a car audio noob and don't really know what am doing, so apologies for what might be a relatively stupid question. Wanted a bit of advice as I am trying to swap my old headunit into the mk2 because it has an aux cable for me to run the ipod from. It seems that it isn't a straight swap though. So I need an adapter of some sort.....

I am taking out the old Sony headunit

and am left with cables like this...

they dont fit my Blaupunkt headunit which looks like this

So I clearly need some sort of adapter which I was told was called an ISO something. However there seems to be millions of versions of these everywhere and not too easy to understand the explanations and to know whether they will fit or not. Can anyone point me in the right direction please....

Planning to upgrade the speakers too as at the moment 3 out of 6 work and the sound is tinny and diabolical. Thinking to go with the Alpines as suggested in another thread. Also need to replace the aerial as it is completely broken and currently the remaining section just sits in the aerial slot connected to nowt.

Answered my own question today. Spent some time researching up on this stuff and got some new wiring from the audio shop and then wired in a permanent live and hey presto my headunit is functional. Now I have ipod working in the car.

Also picked up a set of Alpine door speakers for the car because when I was investigating the reason to why the originals weren't working realised it was because they are not there! Also the mounting for the speakers has been ripped out. So a trip to BnQ, a sheet of mdf and now going out to the garage to play with the jigsaw and cut me some mounts for the speakers so I can get them in.

So sometimes perhaps I do be a little hasty posting on this here forum.

I understand after some work that the original speakers probably were mounted to the extensions on the grill part of the speaker housing. How crap is that though, what sort of audio do you expect from a speaker mounted to a flimsy plastic grill attached by one screw to a relatively flimsy door card. Sooooooooooo.......long story short, I am glad I spent the time to build my mdf mounting and attach it to the actual door and solidly mount the speaker to that. All is in place and functioning and the sound in the car is much better. Still have some distortion on the bass when cranked up from both the tweeters in the dash and the rear speakers. Perhaps I can hustle with the next pay cheque to see if ~£40 can be pushed to the direction of a another 4 Alpine speakers to replace the dire sounding originals.

A set of 3.5" ALPINE SXE-0825S (£19 - caraudiogiant) for the dash and a set of 4"x6"ALPINE SXE-4625S (£23 - caraudiogiant) for the rear.

Pictures to follow because the Blaupunkt HU suits the retro feel of the dash far better than the silver Sony X-Plod ever did. Although I do wish there was some way of turning down the brightness of the display on it. Might even DIY some type of coloured film to reduce the glare....time will tell. Another thing is the routing of the cable for the ipod aux. Not too sure where is best, the small slot above the ashtray is nicely sized and fancied drilling a small hole and running the cable here...but it is a good place for my cigs and I can't see the ipod screen clearly anyway. Thinking custom docking station attached to one of the centre vents, adapted from a £2 drinks holder. Ideas floating around, would like to be able to have the pod situated where I can see the screen and change tracks at ease one handed.

Will update as I go  :undecided:
