My car (mk6) does this if i've had the AC on then stopped the car and come back and drove with the AC off, it's a pain tbh! Sometimes if it's been raining and i use the AC to clear the windows and when they're clear turn it off, the windows steam up like crazy!!

Try experimenting with the AC and see how you get on.

My mrs car does this exact same thing, I personally haven't found a solution as of yet...the only way of controlling it is keeping the AC on all the time(as peeps have said) but of course that uses more fuel...

If you do find a solution before me then please post back!

I've got a Mk4 and I'm sure I've read in the manual that this may happen.  It doesn't specifically say it, but it does say something along the lines of 'When Climatronic is in Auto mode, you may notice unpredictable behaviour, such as directing air to the footwell on first start up, this is to stop moist air being directed to the windscreen on first use'.   So as others have said, to stop it you may need to select 'Auto' (thats on the MK4, on the MK6 I guess the default is 'Auto')

Not had much to do with mk5's mate, but I would have thought you can just have normal air flow - Having the air con all the time seems wasteful to be honest in terms of fuel. I would just monitor it for a while and see what happens with changes in the atmosphere.

I did a quick test this morning before going to work, and just turning on the car, didn't create any fogging. the car doesn't seem to fog up during the night, at all. I found the windshield and the windows perfectly clear.
I can also confirm that you can indeed turn on just normal air flow (not aircon). (my previous car, an audi, only allowed aircon that's why I was a bit doubtful)

spoke to VW Morden and will bring the car in on Monday, but in the meantime I will keep testing...

that's interesting Merlin.
still, what happens to me happens with aircon/air fully OFF.
seems to be related to some sort of thing that happens when the car actually starts moving, as it doesn't happen if I just turn the engine on.

I'm still thinking pollen filter as the air will flow through that once you start moving.  Plus you say it hasn't been changed for two years

Your air con is working.  Damp warm summers do this.  Basic physics i suppose.

Please refrain from paying attention to this lad, he posts dribble most the time. Its not basic physics as hardly anyones car steams and fogs up due to the a damp warm summer.

thanks Alan, I had noticed his posts are less than interesting, so to speak.

back to the original topic, I wanted to update you all on this. the problem simply disappeared overnight. for some reason it hasn't happened since. it is really weird, as I had this really bad for 2 days, and then nothing.

I can only think something temporarily got stuck in the filter? I will keep monitoring but it seems fine now...

I have a '12 plate MK6 and mine does this if I start driving with the air con off and the window open, and has done for the last few weeks. Just normal I guess
