the windshield fogs up in the first minutes...why?
« on: 01 August 2012, 10:05 »
hi all,
in the last couple of days I started noticing something quite strange.
when I turn on the car and start driving, more often than not the windshield fogs up in the lower section up to about half way- it then gradually clears up

obviously this doesn't happen if I have the window(s) down, and if I use the air con it clears up immediately, but isn't it strange that it would fog up with 18 degrees outside? yesterday evening I did a test. I drove and it happened, then it cleared up, then I stopped the car and turned the engine off- I then restarted the car and drove and it came up again...

I cannot see or hear any heating coming up so why the heck is this happening?
I am (quite) sure this didn't happen when I bought it: could it be that either VW battersea or satnavsystem by mistake tampered with the aircon or something? any ideas?
thank you

Have you got the aircon on recirculate, or your pollen filter might need changing

hi mb
the car was just serviced, and the problem happens with the air-con off

mmm - strange one..

there is a high content of moisture in the air at that minute with all this rain. Does the car mist up when its parked? Is there any mositure at the botton of screen before you start the engine?

Damp cars can do this and it normally suggests an external leak, water ingressing from somewhere but on a mk5

Not much help but ingress in worth checking.

hi CL-SID, no there is no moisture before I start the engine...clean screen. I tested the air-con and it seems to work fine...
it seems to develop right after I start driving, starting from the bottom and then gradually disappear... I spoke to satnavsystem and they said nothing they touched could have caused this. they suggested to leave the air on all the time (is there a way to leave the air circulating, normal air, not conditioned air that is; or it's only full air con or off....)

I only had the car for a few days, because I bought it in mid-July and then had my holidays - I am pretty convinced that in the few days that I've driven it before leaving it didn't have this issue? go figure
could it be that the guys @ VW (where I left the car for a week) by accident messed things up in some ways? sounds strange as I didn't even ask them to check that; the car was there for the problem of the ipod dock.

My first thought was the pollen filter as this can cause it, was this checked during the service?

Not had much to do with mk5's mate, but I would have thought you can just have normal air flow - Having the air con all the time seems wasteful to be honest in terms of fuel. I would just monitor it for a while and see what happens with changes in the atmosphere.

Unless it's under warranty

It may leave them scratching their heads though unless the situation is common.

Just found this link on the net - people are talking about cabin filters, unblocking vents in the foot well etc.

I cannot link it on my mac for some reason but paste it in your brouser.

My first thought was the pollen filter as this can cause it, was this checked during the service?

In the last Service they changed the Cambelt, water pump and oil but not the pollen.
And the pollen and dust wasn't checked the service before either. The last time it was checked was 2 services ago, February 2010.
How can I visually check this filter? Any advice?
