I hate the brakes on my GTI don't know if I could trust them in a emergency stop situation, so if I see cars in the distance stopped I start slowing down long before I reach them.

Shouldn't you do that anyway?
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Your brakes must be knackered then as I have no such issues with my GTI brakes. I have had the unfortunate situation to have used mine in anger in the past and the car pulled up very quickly and in a straight line. One of my regular trips home involves a long straight into a 30 limit so my brakes get used hard quite regularly with no issues. Also just returned from a trip through France where the car was fully loaded and drove on some great mountain roads with many hairpins and the brakes did not give me anything but confidence. Nearly had some locals that we're trying to keep up rear end me as the brakes on their run of the mill French crap were not as sharp.

Agreed

I had cause to use my ABS for the first time a few weeks ago.  Car on the inside lane of a two lane road decided to pull across in from of a BMW infront of me to turn right - he braked and when I realised he was stopping and not slowing down I hit my brakes hard, ABS came on and I steered to the side of him stopping almost level with his rear bumper - if I hadn't steered to the side then I would have given him a little nudge . Needless to say my heart was in my mouth but the brakes did their job (thank goodness)

Not intending to bang in about Renault sport but seriously the brembos on my 197 were leagues above the crap on the GTI

The middle pedal is a joy to use on the 197/200. Loads of feel and relentless power - I just couldn't get them to fade.

There was a couple of times where if I didn't have that stopping power (tractor pulling out on me etc) I would have had an accident. Them brembos are fantastic.

As that's my last ca it's hard not to compare the GTI to it but in the braking and turn in/steering feel departments the GTI is no where near what I'm used to.

But the French have always made cars with great chassis set ups....205 GTi, Clio Willams, 306 GTi-6, 106 Rallye, Clio Trophy 182 etc etc..

Only thing I have driven which was an equal for fun and poise was the Integra Type-R, it would run rings around my Golf all day long.

I think the standard brakes on the Gti are average for such a heavy car for everyday day use,
As soon as you drive the car hard ie on track it is a must to upgrade, after just a couple of laps They really start to go downhill and fade very badly, I would expect to upgrade as they are not built for such hard driving,
I think Vw should of put better calipers on as standard tho, at least 4 pot Brembos IMO
Mk6 Gti Gone but not forgtten
Loving the 7R

i agree

I'm sure the standard brakes are decent enough but not for the cars weight. its 200kg too heavy for them stoppers

The standard brakes are verging on dangerous, in my mind. I had mine cooked, and the front end weaving about under heavily braking, on the public road, so it's no surprise to me that a couple of laps of a track and they are toast.
VW has consistantly failed to fit brakes up to the job for years. Shame really.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

Again I just don't buy into this for road use unless you have a heavily modified car and for track use then yes agree.
