Window wipers juddering...brand new car
« on: 28 July 2012, 15:09 »
Picked my car up yesterday, brand new, and today used the wipers for the 1st time. They worked perfect for a few strokes then they started to judder both upwards and downwards. I have checked the rubber, all fitted correctly. The fact both are doing it coud be pointing the problem towards the windscreen?

Could VW have put some kind of rain repellant on it and that's causing the rubber to stick??

Any advice on how I should best clean the screen to try and sort this if it is the problem?...

You could try wiping the blades with a newspaper, and then give your windscreen a good clean.

I've got to agree, it might be that the windscreen needs a bloody good clean or Is it a smearing issue or more of a motor type judder?

I've posted here on this subject before. I had the same problem from new on my GTD. Squeaking and juddering... Drove me absolutely nuts! I tried vinegar, I tried clay bars, I bought several expensive window cleaners/polishes, I tried RainX... I replaced the wiper blades twice! Nothing worked!

Then, for a completely unrelated issue, I had my windscreen replaced under warranty. My wipers have been blissfully silent ever since! I can only conclude that my original screen had some crap on it from the factory that just wouldn't budge. If the car is new, the wiper blades should be absolutely fine. I binned 2 perfectly good sets! Your problem, I am 99% sure, is the screen. You just need to find a way of cleaning it... Or more drastically, replace it.

Gave it a right good clean earlier with some strong glass cleaner, also gave it a light polish and cleaned the blades. Seems to be much better but they are till juddering a bit. The glass definitely felt quite resistant when I started cleaning, I could feel it getting easier and smoother as I was going so I think there is some sort of film over it. Ive been told to try the old school vinegar then dry with newspaper technique. I'll do this tomorrow.

If it doesn't work the car will be going straight to the vw dealer and will be there until its sorted.

Buy some Cerium Oxide (try eBay) and polish with a mf - will definitely sort it!

In the morning I'll try vinegar, acetone and methylated spirit. If that still doesn't do the trick at least I'll have the cleanest windscreen in the land!

Clean the blades and the screen.
