OFFICIAL OLYMPICS Thread
« on: 26 July 2012, 16:59 »
We dont have one, so I thought I would start one............. with my thoughts on the olympics.

Up until now I have been pretty pi$$ed off that we have spent so much money on the games. However as they grow closer I find myself focusing on the actual events that will take place rather than the whole 'London' thing. Living up norf I dont really care what it brings to london (apart from lots of traffic misery ).

Recently though I have noticed the games have brought huge benifit to kids all over the country. This can only be a good thing as far as I am concerned.. Everyone is very quick to blame kids in adidas tracksuits for standing around on corners drinking/smoking/swearing etc etc. Yet everyone seems to be happy to offer a solution rather than a cure. My offer of a cure is to get kids more focused on sports! True its not for everyone... but many of the kids who had such focus generally looked after themselves much better than those that didnt. I suggest the olympics be made a small stepping stone for 'giving spotty teenagers something to do'.

Other than that... I have tickets  (bought for me rather than purchased.... but who is complaining).

Events I am looking forward to...

100m, 200m, & 400m, bits of the football (more so to watch the new batch of younger players coming through), swimming, and generally anything that has potential to get me on the edge of my seat.

It doesnt come round very often, and there is fcuk all you can do about it now its here... so I suggest you go ahead and enjoy the Olympics. This certainly helped me jump on the band wagon and get in the mood

ill watch BOLT, i find its immense how quick a person can be. but if a bbc documentary is to be believed, hes not on form and blake and gay are.

not interested, in Olympic football or dancing or ping pong or any of that micky mouse stuff, track and field is mainly what i think olympics is about

Not really thought much about watching anything.
It's my mates house warming party Saturday night, he lives in Haringey, so I might go have a hung-over mooch round the Olympic village on Sunday.

Over 250,000 volunteers over the entire time of the Para Olympics and Olympics...Think how much good that is doing for the 'city'. People have volunteered to sweep up rubbish for 6 hours a day just for a tracksuit and trainers.

I'd personally be watching every event possible if I wasn't working FFS!  Esp the badminton and womens beach volley ball

From a practical perspective of someone who lives and works in London, it's already a nightmare.
But hey, there are only 8 million people living in London and probably only half of them are going to be affected by road closures, diversions, parking restrictions, traffic jams, clogged trains/tube/buses. And about 40 times that many will be watching around the world. So the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, right.

As for me, I'm not fussed much about sport really so I'm getting out of the way and leaving the area. I'll watch some of the opening ceremony, perhaps some tennis and maybe I can spare 10 seconds for the 100m sprint.

I agree about sport though, the Olympics is a great promotion of sports to the youth of Britain. Even if only 5% of the slackers get of their bum because of it, then it's good.
Sport is one way for kids to be inspired, fulfilled and find something they are good at, which is good no only for them but for those around them.
I used to play tennis and cycle when I was a teenager and along with music, that kept me plenty busy and out of trouble.
