OIL Level was really low
« on: 23 July 2012, 12:27 »
Hi All,

My friend has asked me to find out about his Golf 1.8t agu.

He recently checked the oil level on his car and there basically nothing in there. no oil showing on the dipstick. Obviously enough to keep it running otherwise it would of seized.

He last checked the oil level in April and topped it up to the correct level. So in like 4 months it has used alot of oil.

Anything we can check? its  130kmile car. There is no sign of any smoking and the car runs perfect. Completely standard. No oil in water and no water in Oil.

Can is the oil level being that low effect the car in anyway?

You should be checking oil MUCH more often than that! How many miles has it done since it was last checked?

Some Turbo engines are prone to use a bit of oil and an old 130k engine is bound to use some.

Check the sump / sump plug and oil filter for leaks.

Yes low oil can damage / cause premature wear it should NEVER be allowed to go below minimum .

I must be lucky, mine does not use any and it gets checked every week.

My old engine was on 158 and never used any oil in 7months and I did about 7k in that time. Always checked it every week though.

Mine is also very good rarely needs any oil at all - sometimes it may need drop but only after thousands of miles

You only do 5 miles a week so it shouldn't use any

i think it all depends on how theyve been looked after in there life, mines got no previous history only a print out from a garage in london 5 years ago for service and spark plugs, but after ive replaced the pick up pipe and gave the engine a good service its lovely and quiet, my stem seals are the fault with mine i belive
