Keeping my Mk2 tucked away makes no rational sense what so ever if you think of it as a "car". To me, I just think of it as something nice that I own

Also a MK2 NEEDS using or they just seize up...

This may well be the case, but use it, and bits wear out. Don't use it and bits seize up. Either way, they'll all need working on, and that's half the fun of ownership.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

A lot depends on how they are stored,  if you're not careful even left in a garage whilst looking presentable they can just rot away from the inside out.  Mine is my only car at the moment so will be used pretty much every day. A few miles on the clock won't do it any harm, it has a 170,000+ showing on it and took a lad from work to a run out on Saturday night to a local meet and he commented on how smooth it was running, he also seemed surprised how well it went but TBH after buying it blind so am I

A car to some a hobby obsession to others.......it's like a good pair of shoes, some people save them for best others say f... It and wear them out walking across the moors.

I like this analogy - But unlike a pair of shoes - you can get a MK2 fixed when you wear them out and I don't seem to remember any shoes that you class as an "Iconic" pair and stick away in the wardrobe for 10 year (unless you were Imelda Marcos  or own a pair of Jimmy Chose - but most of us are blokes...).

Also a MK2 NEEDS using or they just seize up... A

It is just an analogy there are differences, you can repair shoes and no cars don't often have laces , hopefully you will agree that the mk2 is verging on classic status  If so classic car owners become involved and they try to preserve cars.... Three years and touch wood the golf has not seized up

Old top gear showed 2 16 v s go head to head years ago with 60,000 mile one against one with something like 18,000 miles. The higher mileage one beat it and now it's become this huge selling point rubbish 20 years later. It could have 160,000 on it and the seller would claim its " just run in".
If that's the case then surely a low mileage one is no better?
Personally I don't care what the mileage is because it's not exactly hard to remove a golf engine is it.

That's it, buy on body condition. Engines and speedos can be changed easily enough. In fact, a high mileage golf with a knackered engine is a great way to haggle it down for buying for naff all, then have it swapped out a day later with your own hands

When I had my mk2 on the road, over a year ago now unfortunately :-( , I drove it through all weather & even though it was meant to be my second car I still managed to do 7k in it! Only reason I have taken it off the road is because I can't afford to run over 400miles a week with a vr6. Engine is only on 72k and it's kept in a garage, started and driven every few months. It was my 1st car and I have no plans to sell it any time soon, it's not going down in value and it's sentimental to me because I have spent 100's of hours working on it. I think about selling my daily every week to get it back on the road but couldn't bear adding over 18/19k boring motorway miles to it every year.
