« on: 19 July 2012, 20:20 »
Hi all, im in the middle of timming up my mk3 8v gti, and im struggeling with it here is what i have:

to me that looks like the Flywheel is pretty much TDC and...

i kno this isnt the best pic but from straight on it looks in time to! but when turning over by hand it feels like it jams! i can push past it but could that be the pistons pushings the valves? i have No1 piston spark plug out

Thanks in advance

Where are you located? If you're not too far I'll come time it up for you? Check timing mark on cam pulley is lined up with the mark on the head, check the timing marks on the crank pulley and auxiliary pulley are in line with each other and whip the distributor cap off and check the rotor arm is lined up with the timing mark on the distributor body

Didn't see your post mate! Got stuck in to the car, Very sorry! Would of been great if you could of, but I did manage it in the end! I think..... Seems to run ok, I think I have the dizzy time wrong still though! As I still have a 5k limiter as I think I'm timing it up to the wrong mark! Its also using a sh!t load more fuel now!:( could that be the ignition timing?

I did mine not so long ago. I got tdc buy putting screw driver down number 1. Then set the cam marking o.t inline with the o.t on head.
leave it at tdc then take dizzy cap off and line up the marking with the arm, it has 13mm nut at the bottom. Loosen that and then turn the body.

job done.

no! Not the arrow. On the cam pulley near the teeth you will have O.T and between O.T there is a line that you use to line up with O.T on the head. Your timing must be well out

in fact the O.T is on the teeth. Inspect your pulley and find first.

Did you use a strobe?

Best way to get the timing right, espacially when adjusting the dizzy.
