i think deano is near you. or there is a place in cannock called midland vw, the guy who does the diagnostics there is pretty good :lipsrsealed:

There is a V shaped clamp with a 13mm bolt at the base of the distributors, slacken it and it should move. I set mine without using vagcom, just a code reader showing hall sensor fault although it will never be exact and you really need it set to the correct values. Why do you believe it out of tolerance anyway? has it had a recent cam belt?

5000rpm limit is a big clue. it could be something else but its the easiest thing to try first. depends what fault codes show up i guess!

Well I have just got it to tdc and the dizzy lines up but cam doesn't by about a tooth! I'm guessing that's what it is, but don't know where to risk timming it myself lol

Yeah but it won't knock itself out of time on its own though. More likely a fault with tha hall sensor or the wiring.

Flywheel mark lined up yeah?

could be the dizzy itself, could be lots of things  strangely they do seem to go out of sync occasionally, just enough to trigger the code i've seen it on a few mk3s

Yeah there should be a visible mark on the flywheel, if you can't see it it may not be quite a tdc.

Right well I think I have the engine timing timed up! But still have a 5k limiter as I think I am trying to time the dizzy up to the wrong mark! Has anyone got a pic of what it looks like? Also my cars is using a lot more fuel, can really smell it to, could this be cause of the ignition timming out?

Thanks

Mine was having the same issue.

Plugged it into vagcom & got hall sender fault.

After a read up, I got vagcom to log the data, undid the 13mm dizzy bolt & turned it do the parameters were correct.

I'll try & find the link for instructions somewhere.

Took 10 mins & now revs all the way.
